Network Science: Embracing Complexity in the Age of Connectivity

Instructors:
Prof. Ralucca & LTC Jon Roginski

I learnt new technical knowledge that broadened my horizons, enabled me to participate in or understand discussions related to network science, and may be directly applicable to my projects in the future.

Gained both background knowledge and hands-on experience for key aspects of network science and tools such as Gephi and related Python modules.

Able to combine both theoretical concepts with implementation platforms. This allows participants to appreciate how / what processes are needed to perform network analysis. Beyond that, Prof. was able to provide use-case examples to let us appreciate its applications.

Gained a better appreciation of Network Science; and how Graph Theory and visualisations allow better insights of a network.

Cyber Security for Industrial Control Systems and the Internet of Things

Instructor:
A/Prof. Biplab Sikdar

Very insightful course. The demonstration on penetration testing was particularly interesting.

There are many terms introduced to cybersecurity & IoT. The interesting part is on the tools as well as framework on cybersecurity testing.

The case studies shown and examples given were relevant and interesting.

Internet of Things and Data Analytics for Industry - Online

Instructor:
A/Prof. Tham Chen Khong

The lecturer had introduced practical and applicable Data Analysis techniques used by the industries, and notably, cautioned us against the need to always choose the most "complex" algorithm to solve a problem as it might not yield better results.

I have no background on the subject and the course gave me good overview of IoT, with just enough technical depth to appreciate the techniques and challenges of performing data analytics for anomaly detection. The course also demonstrated well on the application and limitations of using multiple linear regression, KNN and SVM techniques in anomaly detection.

This course has provided me with an insight to the world of IoT and the communications technology behind driving the interoperability of the divides. I've also understood that modelling systems have been made easier with IoT as the data logged from each individual components are able to provide more accurate predictions than the synthetic data inputted into models.

Heard a lot of buzz about IoT but rarely have time to sieve out tremendous amount of info on the general Internet. The course helps to distil key areas and even dwells into the mechanics (using R) behind. This has helped my understanding of the topic in a short amount of time and even inspires me to try out some of the concepts & methods in R for work/interest.

Systems Design & Improvement Expert Programme

Both Professors were helpful and knowledgeable in their work. They were always approachable and tried to understand contexts from our point of view.

Tools like swim lane are very useful when we are designing our processing workflow. Prof. provided some real-world examples that helped us understand and relate to our areas of work.

The course assisted me to implement a step-by-step thinking process, on how we do our current work flow. From there we are able to see the “need”, “good to have”, and “can be cut”, to improve our work process.

I now understand that with the application of systems design and engineering concepts, it can help us to do a proper project from the start till the end, taking every detail into consideration.

The course introduced some statistical techniques which can be used in the project solution to demonstrate statistical illustration of its usefulness that will help to justify its costs and benefits.

My team and I are able to apply the concepts taught to our work processes and significantly achieve time savings to run our operations.

Cybersecurity Management Course

Good refresh on topics, plus good engagement by lecturers on topics relevant to the class.

It is very useful to look at the issues from an academic perspective. Brings us out of the trenches.

The real-life case studies and examples enhanced our understanding and learning.

Systems Reliability-Availability-Maintenance (RAM) Engineering Programme

The Systems RAM Engineering Programme had provided good overview and insights to the domain. The course included informative theoretical sessions and hands-on calculations to determine system availability using historical data, to help in the analysis for maintainability of the system, which will in turn reduce the system’s total life cycle costs. The lecturer had displayed in-depth knowledge of the domain and was able to share interesting case studies in building systems resiliency during the lessons.
